Scholarships

We are accepting applications for possible IASP and SFS scholarships to UMBC. For possible SFS scholarships starting Spring 2019, applications are due 12 noon on February 15, 2019.

Through the academic year 2016-2017, UMBC will have supported a total of 27 cybersecurity students at the BS, MS, MPS, and Ph.D. levels in CS and related fields (CE, EE, IS, Cyber). Each scholarship is for the final two years (3 years for Ph.D. and combined BS/MS). Interested in full-time degree students should contact Dr. Alan Sherman and visit the SFS, Cyber Scholar or CySP scholarship page.

Each SFS scholarship covers tuition, fees, travel, books, and academic year stipend of $34,000 for MS/MPS, and $22,500 for BS. Applicants must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents capable of obtaining a SECRET or TOP SECRET clearance. Each scholar must work for the federal, state, local, or tribal government (for pay) for one year for each year of the award. SFS is an exclusive award: each recipient must decline all other awards.

We are currently in the process of submitting a proposal to renew our five-year grant. At this time, we cannot promise the availability of funds to support new students. We hope to be able to support new students beginning in spring 2019.

We hold 2-3 scholarship competition rounds each year (with applications due mid-November, early February, and sometimes also in May). For SFS scholarships starting fall 2016, we added one final special round with deadline August 15, 2016. This was the last scholarship application competition under the current grant.

Applications to be received by Dr. Alan Sherman in ITE 325. All applications must be submitted in paper form with official transcripts and signed original letters on letterhead — no staples, folders, or binders. All applications must use the following cover sheet.

See https://www.sfs.opm.gov/ for SFS details.
