------------------------------------------------------------------- CMSC 626 - Principles of Computer Security Fall 2006 Krishna Sivalingam Term Project: Final Report Requirements. Due: Dec. 13, 2006, 11pm using On-line submit. Submit a tar-gzipped file with report in PDF format and source code/data files. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Part A. TEAM SUBMISSION (required for both group and individual team projects) ----------------------- The report should be typewritten/printed, single-spaced, with 1-inch margin on all sides, use 11pt font, and be between 10 and 15 pages long. The recommended report organization is as follows: 1. Introduction: Problem/System Description; Motivation to study this particular problem; Proposed Solution/System Architecture & Why the solution is better 2. Background and Related Work: Summary of published work related to your problem. This should be a fairly detailed summary (2 pages or so). This will convey your efforts in background material reading. 3. System and Security Architecture: Describe the system that you are developing and/or the specific problem that you are trying to solve. Explain clearly how the project relates to computer security. Present a DETAILED system design or problem solving algorithm/mechanism that specifies the relevant security components. You must also discuss to what extent the 8 principles of secure system design were followed in this project, as described on page 252-253 of Pfleeger/Pfleeger's textbook. You must also discuss which secure coding techniques were used in your project implementation - refer to the Project 2 description required by 426 students. 4. Implementation Details and Performance Study Describe known weaknesses or possible security exploits against your system, that you know could exist due to design/implementation choices. 5. Bibliography of references: Use the IEEE or ACM format for references. References should be complete and include Authors, Title, Journal Name, Volume, Number, Month/Year, Pages. For conferences, spell out the conference name and include location. Note that each listed document in the references list MUST be cited within the document. 6. Your opinion on whether the paper is almost ready (with some extra work) to be submitted to a conference or journal. If so, which would be the most appropriate ones? NOTE: A Professional quality report is expected. Pay attention to the clarity of the graphs. Be sure to spell check and ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors. The penalties will be high for trivial errors. Part B. INDIVIDUAL SUBMISSION BY EACH TEAM MEMBER (Only for group projects) ------------------------------------------------- IF you worked as a team, each team member must email me with the following information: a. Describe how the project work was shared between the team members, and your evaluation of your team member's participation. b. Comment on your experience, working as a team. c. List your OVERALL respective contributions to the project, considering work done throughout the semester: e.g. yourself: 60%; team member Y: 40% (Should add up to 100%; be honest in your evaluation) d. Comments to instructor on the term project format and how it may be improved. ----------------------------------------------------------------
